SIA Outdoor Education
The operation manager / principal is Mike Downard, a UK qualified Outdoor Education teacher with 30 years experience. Mike was formerly the chief instructor at London's biggest watersports centre.
Mike holds qualifications in Canoeing, Windsurfing, Dinghy Sailing, Yachting and Power/ Motor Yachting.
The Sail in Asia yacht training centre is certified by IYT and ISSA.
Sail in Asia and its outdoor education programme have been in operation for over ten years. Our fleet and facilities are perfectly suited to guide young individuals through the process of learning to sail, building team-working skills, and learning how subjects usually only covered in the classroom have relevance to real-life. We also offer Professional Development weekends for school teachers.Sail in Asia is the only sailing school in SE Asia that trains watersports instructors.
Ao Yon Outdoor Education Base Phuket
The Sail in Asia Sea Base in Phuket is a purpose-designed outdoor education centre for international schools. We have changing rooms for male and female students and our fleet comfortably allows for 50 students with instructor to students ratios of 5:1 per boat.
The Sea Base is found at Ao Yon Bay, Phuket Island which is effectively a private beach. This is a great location to be able to learn to sail and explore nature.
Ao Yon bay is just around the corner from the mouth of a mangrove estuary, tropical forests and sandy or rocky intertidal ecosystems. In addition to the many local areas of interest, there are several small islands and national marine parks nearby that are delights to sail to, for day or overnight trips.
Outdoor Education at Ocean Marina Jomtien
We also have a facility at Ocean Marina near Pattaya. This facility allows us to use the sea and nearby lakes within the marina grounds.
The camping site is close by the two lakes and we have access to a huge field nearby for sports activities. There are a fleet of 12 Platus keelboats and so can offer large numbers of students (60) training or adventure training courses. The lakes allow us to offer Dragon Boating, Camping, Canoeing and Team Building.
An adventure playground facility is a 15 minute bus ride from the Ocean Marina and this facility has a range of climbing and challenging activities with good safety equipment and well qualified instructors to organise groups.
The Pattaya site at Ocean Marina includes a hotel provision rather than camping and may be worth considering for International School Groups that are flying in from overseas and want to rest the students on arrival and departure.
Krabi Outdoor Education Site
We are now developing our Krabi Outdoor Education base which is ideal for trips by canoe, dragon boats and keelboats. The camping sites are located in the beautiful new Krabi Boat Lagoon Marina and its nearby, KBL Resort beach location, also owned by the marina. The sites have Capsule accommodation, as an alternative to Camping should groups prefer this option.
The two sites are ecologically spectacular. They are part of Krabi district's huge network of mangrove rivers and estuaries. The nearby offshore islands, easily lend themselves to day trips or overnight trips on sailing craft. This site is being promoted by the KBL marina for schools Outdoor Education Adventure trips because of the owners commitment to developing ecological awareness of this as yet unspoilt wilderness.
The Adventurous Journeys available in this location can also be bespoke. We welcome discussions with School Group Leaders about their thoughts and requirements for their trips and we do as much as possible to offer interesting river trips in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
About Sail in Asia and its Outdoor Education programmes
Sailing takes place on the sea on our fabulous fleet of Platu Keelboats and Farr 1104 Ocean going Sailing Yachts. Students can participate in Sailing Courses that have internationally recognised certification (International Sailing School Association).
We are currently applying for ITAP status so we can run Adventurous Journeys as part of the Duke of Edinburgh / International Awards at Gold, Silver and Bronze levels.
Our staff are all trained IYT / RYA / ISSA instructors and are safety certified through STCW, an international safety standards certification program for professional seafarers. In addition to this, we have a fully qualified principal teacher (B.Ed Hons) with over 35 years Outdoor Education teaching experience. The captains and instructors of the yachts work with teachers and team leaders to challenge and motivate students, and bring out the best from them as they succeed.
Our Core Activities, Additional Activities and Adventurous Journeys give schools a huge range of choices to form their bespoke Outdoor Education programme for students. Our Professional Development courses enable school teachers to gain high quality qualifications to support their groups on school journeys.
SIA School Trip Management
Sail in Asia arranges and organises everything before your group even arrives at the airport. Pre-trip packages to prepare students for the field trip are available for use in the classroom, or independent study. Detailed itineraries from morning to evening ensure that student learning is always at the forefront of each day. A variety of evening activities are available so that students can discover Phuket, Krabi or Pattaya. This will reinforce and extend learning from each day.
Our school trip management is highly organised, in conjunction with lead teachers. We review all aspects of the Schools Outdoor Education trip, catering and camping arrangements, health and safety, risk assessments and the particular Core and Additional activities chosen by the school. This is a bespoke process that occurs in a Pre Visit or Skype Conference. Rigorous safety standards and risk assessment means that students are always well prepared and taken care of during all activities.
